Blood supply of the spinal cord 242-N-PA-33

Starting from the vertebral arteries, the aorta and the iliac arteries, the following 5 main supply arteries of the spinal cord arise: one anterior spinal artery/ two posterior spinal arteries/ anterior and posterior radicular arteries/arterial vasocorona (anastomosis between the spinal arteries). Here, the unpaired anterior spinal artery supplies the front 2/3 of the spinal cord, which is why its damage is more dangerous and cannot be compensated. Furthermore, the large radiculomedullary artery ("adamkiewicz") plays an outstanding role due to its central and large thoracolumbar supply area. During surgery in the dependent areas, special care is required here and, if necessary, a previous angiography should be carried out for identification.
