TCD is a non-invasive, painless ultrasound technique that uses high-frequency sound waves to measure the rate and direction of blood flow inside intracranial arteries. Typical indications are screening for vasospasm in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), screening for signs of angiopathy in pediatric sickle cell disease patients, evaluation for a right-to-left shunt in the setting of stroke and suspected paradoxical embolism (interatrial foramen ovale open?) & transient ischemic attacks (TIA) with pathological flow profiles.
