The neurophysiological augmentation of a signal can take place in two ways. temporal summation occurs when a pre-depolarized neuron is depolarized by rapidly arriving subsequent stimulations. In spatial summation, the depolarizing stimuli come from different directions (and are also close together in time). The two processes play a very important role in the pathophysiology of epilepsy, but also in anesthesia, sedation and pain therapy
