This diagram shows the outdated procedure of the (S)IMV - (spontaneous) intermittent mandatory ventilation. Here, the ventilator will deliver a mandatory (set) number of breaths with a set volume while at the same time allowing spontaneous breaths in between. Basic principles and application are shown because many (older) ventilators still have this procedure originally intended for weaning.
