The relationship between pressure and volume within the intracranial cavity (skull) is determined by the low compliance (volumetric extensibility) of it. Any increase in volume of any of the three intracranial components (cerebrospinal fluid, blood, brain tissue) will also increase the pressure there. It is obvious that the possibility of compensation is very small and, once exhausted, there is a risk of irreversible damage to the brain parenchyma.
