Graded potentials are specific membrane potentials which vary in size and the direction of the total current in the nerve membranes. Graded potentials are a way to direct, augment or reduce con- and divergent synaptic and/or axonal currents. Their influence occurs frequently in anesthesia and intensive care medicine: sedations, general anesthesia, local anesthesia, anticonvulsant therapies, regional anesthesia and various analgesic procedures, to name a few examples.
