Diffusion capacity of the lung for CO (DLCO) is an very important parameter, it is highly validated for fast and precise evaluation of diffsion capacities of alveolocapillary membrane. The DLCO measures the diffusion capacity of the lung and thus allows conclusions about the ability of the lungs to enable breathing gases to diffuse. During the measurement, the test subject breathes in test air that contains a defined amount of carbon monoxide (CO). After inspiration, air is kept for 10 seconds before exhaling through measuring device. The difference in CO partial pressures between in- & espiration informs about diffusion capacity of the lungs. CO is used due to its high binding capacity to Hb, good measurability & comparable transfer pathwy to oxygen.
